You slowed down to a halt
The usual river that flows across my skin, now just dragging.
And the pain was numbed by ice
Everybody slowed down
And it was very quiet
It’s incredible how much there is in the quiet
The whispers are so loud
The whispers of my heart, and gut, and breath
Before long the sun will melt the ice
I will thaw
And for now I really enjoy
This slowness.
This nothingness
Day rolls into long night
And long night is full of swirling, whisping ghosts
Not haunting by any means
I long for these ghosts
They comfort me, somehow.
I am soft with them, and they tell me stories.
It’s intoxicating.
I hear my breath and blinking of eyes.
I listen, as the black water moves slowly across rocks in the riverbed.
The sound of snow in the air.
Telling me stories.
